Section titled “Basics”| Feature | Nouto | Postman | Insomnia | Bruno | Yaak | Thunder Client |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open Source | Yes (MIT) | No | Yes (Apache 2.0) | Yes (MIT) | Yes | No |

| Web Version | No | Yes | No | No | Yes | No |
| CLI | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Paid |
Nouto is fully free with no account, no telemetry, and no feature gating. Postman’s free tier requires an account for most features and stores data in the cloud by default. Thunder Client locks WebSocket, SSE, gRPC, scripting, and CLI behind paid plans.
Protocols
Section titled “Protocols”| Feature | Nouto | Postman | Insomnia | Bruno | Yaak | Thunder Client |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP/1.1 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| HTTP/2 | Partial | Yes | Partial | No | Yes | - |

| Server-Sent Events | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Paid |
| gRPC (all patterns) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Paid |
| gRPC Reflection | Yes | Yes | - | Yes | Yes | - |
All six support the core protocols, but Thunder Client puts WebSocket, SSE, and gRPC behind a paywall. Nouto’s HTTP/2 support relies on ALPN negotiation (the server decides); explicit HTTP/2 prior knowledge is not yet configurable.
Authentication
Section titled “Authentication”| Feature | Nouto | Postman | Insomnia | Bruno | Yaak | Thunder Client |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic / Bearer / API Key | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| OAuth 2.0 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |

| NTLM | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Auth Inheritance | Yes | Yes | Partial | Yes | - | Yes |
Nouto and Bruno support the broadest set of auth methods. Insomnia’s auth inheritance has known issues with WebSocket requests and OAuth 2.0 template tags.
Variables and Environments
Section titled “Variables and Environments”| Feature | Nouto | Postman | Insomnia | Bruno | Yaak | Thunder Client |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple Environments | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |

| Secret Variables | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Paid |
Nouto and Yaak offer the richest set of dynamic variables, including hash functions, encoding/decoding, regex, faker data, file reads, and interactive prompts. Postman’s dynamic variables cover the basics (guid, timestamp, random). Nouto stores secrets in the OS keychain (Windows Credential Manager, macOS Keychain, Linux Secret Service) so they never appear in collection files on disk.
Testing and Automation
Section titled “Testing and Automation”| Feature | Nouto | Postman | Insomnia | Bruno | Yaak | Thunder Client |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-request Scripts | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Paid |

| Benchmarking | Yes | Yes | No | No | No | No |
| Mock Server | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | No | - |
| Monitors | No | Yes | No | No | No | - |
This is where Nouto differentiates most strongly. It is the only free tool that combines scripting, no-code assertions, a collection runner, data-driven testing, benchmarking, and a mock server in one package. Yaak has no scripting or testing at all. Bruno locks its GUI collection runner and data-driven runs behind paid plans.
